Agitation

Agitation is a serious, disruptive and pathological complication of many chronic psychological disorders, such as schizophrenia and mania. There are approximately five million adults in Europe afflicted by psychotic disorders. Agitation is defined by the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” as an “excessive motor activity associated with a feeling of inner tension.”

Everyday life

Agitation is commonplace among patients, in particular those with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. It should be treated as early and as effectively as possible to prevent any escalation in potentially dangerous behaviour such as violence.

Acute agitation in psychological disorders often leads to considerable stress for patients and their relatives. Patients admitted to the emergency room often pose a serious threat to themselves and others.
